If you pay someone to maintain your website, here are some helpful talking points to use when you correspond:
1) How is my website performing on mobile?
Mobile traffic (aka on-a-phone traffic) makes up 60+% of all web traffic globally. It’s important that your site is functional (and readable) on a tiny screen.
2) Tell me about your SEO strategy and how I can help.
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is usually a service you’re paying for when working through a webmaster.
There are some aspects of SEO that can only be handled on the admin side, but you may be able to participate as well.
See if you can write additional content for your site or offer a few new keyword ideas.
3) What’s our engagement rate looking like?
Engagement rate is an analytics term that refers to how many visitors to a site interact with the site.
Ex: 10 visitors come to your site. Three leave right away, but seven stick around and explore. You’d have a 70% engagement rate.
This can be a good health-check for your site. If your engagement rate is low, it could mean that your site isn’t loading quickly enough or your navigation is unclear.
4) Do you have any goals for my website that could be accomplished if you had additional content from me?
Give the person an open floor to request anything they may need: updated pictures, staff bios, landing page content, etc.
5) Are there any upgrades or plugins you think might be in our best interest?
Beware: this is a chance for them to pitch to you – but – hear them out. It might be time to start considering an upgrade to mobile, for instance.
Especially if you work through an agency, these questions are important to ensure that you’re receiving the services for which you’re paying.
If you’re ever unsure about answers you receive, forward them over. I’d be happy to offer some friendly advice.
